Rescuers Call Off Search for Two Trapped in Laos Cave After Floods and Earthquake Block Mission
International rescue teams have suspended the search for two Lao nationals trapped in a Xaisomboun province cave after heavy floods and an earthquake blocked access. Five of seven gold prospectors were rescued.
Search Called Off for Two Missing in Xaisomboun Cave
International rescue teams have suspended operations for two Lao nationals still inside a cave in Long Jaeng district, Xaisomboun province, Laos. Five of the seven people who entered the cave on 19 May to prospect for gold have been brought out safely. Heavy rain and flash floods blocked the exit for the remaining group members.
Natural Conditions Halt Further Rescue Work
The worksite lies between four mountains, where floodwater poured in from all directions faster than pumps could remove it. An earthquake centred 200 kilometres away triggered a rockfall that blocked the cave entrance. Rescue teams left supplies and equipment at points inside the cave before withdrawing, while pumping operations continue to maintain oxygen levels.
Commander States Mission Goals Could Not Be Met
Kengkaj Bongkavong, the rescue mission commander, said every person on the ground right now is heartbroken. He added that the goal had always been to bring everyone home, but the mission could not continue under the uncontrollable natural conditions.
Thai Teams Begin Withdrawal from Laos Site
Thai rescue teams started pulling out personnel and equipment on Sunday from the Xaisomboun province location. They stated they are ready to return immediately if conditions improve. Rescue diver Manat Artmongkol wrote that the tears shed by the team came from having given everything they had, noting the group reached the furthest point any human being could go.
Rescuer Provides Direct Support to Families
Fellow Thai rescuer Jakkrits Tangtang, known as Pound, said the team had fought as hard as they could but could not overcome nature. He personally donated 30 million kip to each of the two missing persons' families, for a total of 60 million kip, equivalent to around 90,000 baht.
Regional Teams Maintain Readiness Across Borders
Teams from Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries coordinated closely during the operation in Long Jaeng district. Their continued monitoring of water levels and rock conditions reflects the shared geography and seasonal challenges faced by communities along the Mekong region.
