Phimai National Museum Reopens After 30 Years — Biggest Renovation in Its History
NAKHON RATCHASIMA — The Phimai National Museum has reopened its doors following its largest renovation since the museum first opened in 1993, featuring upgraded galleries, cutting-edge technology, and expanded public spaces.
The overhaul covers both floors of the main exhibition building, which now features nine galleries tracing the history of Phimai from prehistoric times through the height of the Khmer Empire to the present day. Highlights include newly restored artefacts, interactive displays, and a digital reconstruction of the Phimai Historical Park as it appeared in the 12th century.
Phimai, located in Nakhon Ratchasima province, is home to one of Thailand's most important Khmer temple complexes. The Phimai Historical Park draws visitors from around the world who come to see its stunning sandstone prang and intricate carvings. The museum, which sits adjacent to the temple complex, provides essential context for understanding the site's historical and cultural significance.
The renovation, which took two years to complete, introduces multimedia exhibits, touchscreen displays, and improved accessibility features. For the first time, visitors can explore 3D models of the temple complex, view high-resolution images of artefacts that are too fragile to display permanently, and learn about ongoing archaeological research at the site.
"This is not just a museum renovation," said a Fine Arts Department official at the opening ceremony. "This is a reimagining of how we tell the story of Thailand's rich cultural heritage to a new generation."
The museum is open daily from 9 AM to 4 PM, with discounted admission for Thai nationals and students.
