Candidate Unveils Vision During Ratchathewi Visit
Mallika Boonmeetrakul Mahasuk, running as independent candidate number 14 for Bangkok governor, made her street food pledge this week while visiting the Ban Krua community in Ratchathewi district.
She toured Ban Krua Nuea, Ban Krua Tai and Ban Krua Tawan Ok communities to discuss her plan for designated vending zones that operate around the clock.
Creating a 24-Hour Street Food Paradise
Mallika stated that parts of Bangkok would become a Street Food Paradise open seven days a week and 24 hours a day under her leadership.
Her approach calls for more pavement space for vendors instead of moving them to hidden areas where customers cannot easily reach them.
The policy forms one part of her 14-policy framework and relies on community-based agreements to keep order and cleanliness.
Respecting Local Character in Ban Krua
Mallika explained that street food areas should reflect the unique identity of each neighbourhood, using Ban Krua as a clear example.
She stressed that vendors would sell in designated zones with clear community identity while meeting uniform standards of cleanliness and organisation.
Problems in any area would be settled through public consultation rather than top-down restrictions.
Supporting Nighttime Dining and Economic Activity
The candidate noted that Bangkok residents and workers continue eating after 18:00, with many seeking meals at 22:00 or later.
She argued that the city must support these groups because Bangkok functions around the clock and demand for food never stops.
This measure aims to stimulate economic activity during the current crisis through consistent and fair rules.
Enforcing Hygiene Standards and Ending Informal Payments
Mallika warned that vendors must follow hygiene rules including proper waste disposal and must never pour oil into drains.
She stated that anyone failing to comply would be removed after being given a chance to improve.
City enforcement officers would no longer accept informal payments, and rules would be applied evenly across all vendors.
Adding Safety Infrastructure for Communities
Mallika also promised 24-hour lighting in residential areas so residents no longer worry about basic urban safety.
These improvements would help daily life in neighbourhoods such as those in Ratchathewi district while supporting the wider street food economy.
The plan connects directly to Thai community values of harmony and shared responsibility that residents already practise in places like Ban Krua.
