Bangkok Temple Thief Caught on CCTV Despite Chanting Concealment Spell

Theft at Wat Pho on 30 May

On 30 May, representatives of Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram, known as Wat Pho and home to the Reclining Buddha, reported a night-time theft from two wooden donation boxes inside a pavilion on the temple grounds in Bangkok.

Police found the boxes moved to the rear of the pavilion and smashed open, with a small tripod nearby that investigators believe was used to break them open.

Arrest of Security Guard Ratchathan

Lt. Gen. Siam Boomsom, commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, together with Maj. Gen. Pallop Aemla and Maj. Gen. Chaikrit Pho-a, announced on 4 June the arrest of 43-year-old Ratchathan.

Officers apprehended him at the entrance to Soi Lat Phrao 136 in Bangkok's Bang Kapi district at about 12:30 on 3 June, following an arrest warrant issued by the Criminal Court on 2 June.

CCTV Evidence and Suspect Description

Temple staff reviewed CCTV footage showing a man in a black T-shirt, black trousers and black trainers with white laces entering the pavilion at about 01:25 on 30 May, with a white cloth wrapped around his head to conceal his face.

Additional footage captured the suspect moving the donation boxes and the resulting damage before he left the area.

Confession and Cultural Elements at Wat Pho

During questioning, Ratchathan confessed to climbing over the temple wall, targeting the donation boxes because he needed money to pay his rent, and using the stolen 100 20-baht banknotes, worth 2,000 baht, for rent and living expenses.

He told investigators he had previously visited Wat Pho, knew money was inside the donation boxes, apologised to the temple's sacred spirits before the act, and recited what he described as a concealment spell that he believed would prevent others from noticing him.

Charges and Prior Record

Ratchathan, who works as a security guard in Bangkok's Pinklao area, faces charges of night-time theft, trespassing at night, criminal damage, and concealing his identity while committing an offence.

Police noted he admitted a previous theft conviction in another province and had moved to Bangkok after serving that sentence.

Why This Matters for Thai Communities

The incident at Wat Pho, a central site for Buddhist merit-making and community donations, highlights the violation of sacred temple spaces where locals regularly offer 20-baht notes to support monks and temple upkeep.

Such acts affect the trust that Bangkok residents place in the protection of religious sites like Wat Pho in the Phra Nakhon district, reminding communities of the need to safeguard these cultural and spiritual anchors.
