Ankara Prepares for July NATO Summit

Türkiye is implementing extensive security measures in Ankara ahead of the NATO summit scheduled for July 7-8. The Turkish capital will host delegations that include U.S. President Donald Trump on his first visit to the country. Officials have designated multiple sites as red zones with restricted access for both pedestrians and vehicles.

Scale of Security Personnel and Surveillance

Authorities have assigned 40,000 security personnel, drawn from police and gendarmerie units, to cover the summit. Plainclothes officers will supplement the uniformed forces. In addition to existing CCTV coverage, 100 high-tech observer cams will be installed at critical locations throughout the city during the event.

Red Zones and Public Assembly Restrictions

Red zones will encompass Esenboğa airport and its immediate surroundings, the summit venue itself, all routes connecting these points, and the 15 hotels designated for visiting delegations. A separate ban prohibits all public events and assemblies across Ankara from July 1 to July 15.

Airport Renovations and Flight Limitations

Esenboğa airport will operate under reduced incoming international flights for the duration of the summit. Security checkpoints will be established on all approach roads to the capital. Türkiye has also renovated the military airport in the Etimesgut district, which is set to reopen later this month to handle the additional flights required by summit participants.

Preparations for Attendees and Protest Monitoring

Logistical arrangements are underway to support at least 6,000 people expected to attend the summit. Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi recently chaired a coordination meeting with senior security officials. Turkish authorities are also exchanging information with other countries regarding individuals linked to protests abroad, with those flagged in intelligence reports barred from entering Ankara.
