Thai Grandmother Spends Her Life Savings on a House — For Her Stray Cats
SUKHOTHAI — An 81-year-old retired court official in Sukhothai province has spent 1 million baht buying a house — not for herself, but for four stray cats who had made it their home.
Kanokvann Panwichian, a former director of the Phitsanulok Provincial Court office, said the cats had originally wandered into her home several years ago. She fed them, cared for them, and they became part of her family. When the owners of the house they had taken shelter in decided to sell the property, Kanokvann faced an impossible choice: let the cats lose their home, or buy the house herself.
She chose the cats.
"They are my family," Kanokvann said. "I could not let them become homeless. They have been with me through good times and bad. They deserve a home as much as anyone."
The house, a modest single-storey property in Sukhothai's Muang district, is now officially the cats' home. Kanokvann visits them every day to feed them and make sure they are safe. The neighbours, initially surprised by the unusual arrangement, have come to accept it as a heartwarming example of Thai kindness.
The story has captured the hearts of people across Thailand and beyond. In a world that can often feel harsh, the image of an 81-year-old woman spending her life savings to secure a home for four stray cats is a reminder that compassion comes in many forms.
Kanokvann says she has no regrets. "Money comes and goes," she said. "But love for those who depend on you — that lasts forever."
