Narco-Blockades Paralyze Colima After Deadly Police Operation
Drug cartel members erected narco-blockades across the city of Colima on Monday night, burning vehicles and blocking major roads in retaliation for a police operation that left two suspected criminals dead and two officers wounded.
The violence erupted after an operation by the Colima State Attorney General's Office (FGEC) resulted in a confrontation that left two suspected cartel members dead. One of the injured police officers is reported to be in serious condition.
In response, cartel gunmen set up blockades on key roadways throughout the city, using stolen cars, burning tires, and even hijacked buses to prevent movement. Residents were urged to stay indoors as gunfire was reported in multiple neighbourhoods. The blockades caused widespread panic and effectively shut down large parts of the city for hours.
State officials confirmed that a US citizen wanted for homicide in the United States was detained as part of the operation, though it remains unclear whether he was connected to the cartel violence.
Colima, one of Mexico's smallest states, has been tragically transformed by cartel violence in recent years. Despite its size, it consistently ranks among the states with the highest homicide rates in the country, as rival cartels battle for control of drug trafficking routes to the Pacific coast.
Security analysts say the narco-blockade tactic is designed to project power and intimidate both authorities and the public. "They want to show that they can paralyse a city whenever they choose," one analyst said. "And right now, they're proving it."
