North Korea Fires Ballistic Missiles as Rumours Swirl of Chinese Leader Visit
North Korea fired close-range ballistic missiles into the sea on Wednesday, a familiar show of force that takes on added significance amid swirling rumours that Chinese President Xi Jinping may be preparing to visit Pyongyang.
The missile launch, confirmed by South Korean and Japanese authorities, involved multiple projectiles fired from North Korea's eastern coast. They travelled approximately 300 kilometres before splashing down in the Sea of Japan. It is the latest in a series of weapons tests that have become a regular feature of North Korea's military calendar.
But the timing is what makes this launch noteworthy. Reports have been circulating in diplomatic circles that Xi Jinping may visit Pyongyang in the coming months β a move that would mark the first meeting between the two leaders since Xi's controversial 2019 trip to North Korea. A Xi visit would signal a strengthening of the China-North Korea axis at a time when both countries face increasing pressure from the United States and its allies.
North Korea's missile test sends a clear message: Pyongyang will press ahead with its own military modernisation timeline regardless of the diplomatic calendar. Whether Xi visits or not, North Korea intends to continue developing its weapons capabilities, including its nuclear deterrent and ballistic missile systems.
For South Korea, the calculus is increasingly difficult. The North's weapons are becoming more sophisticated. The China-North Korea relationship is deepening. And the diplomatic tools available to Seoul β economic pressure, military deterrence, and international diplomacy β all have limits.
As one Seoul-based analyst put it: "North Korea fires missiles when it wants attention and when it wants leverage. The question is whether anyone in the region has a strategy to change that calculus."
