Beyond the Yellow Line: Israel's Expanding Seizure of Gaza Strip Territory

Netanyahu's Ambitious Territorial Goals

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu outlined further seizures of land in Gaza during a conference on May 28. He stated that Israeli forces currently control 60 percent of the territory, up from 50 percent, with a directive to reach 70 percent step by step. Netanyahu described pressing Hamas from all sides while dealing with remaining elements, revealing plans that extend Israel's hold over Palestinian land.

The Yellow Line and Ongoing Expansion

Reports from Haaretz in January highlighted the westward shift of the so-called Yellow Line, marking areas under Israeli military control. Geographic information systems expert Laurie Bouvier from Doctors Without Borders confirmed the 60 percent figure as accurate, noting new yellow blocks appearing in neighborhoods such as Zeitoun in Gaza City. This expansion has already altered the landscape for families living nearby.

Deadly Ceasefire and Loss of Life

The US-brokered ceasefire effective since October 10, 2025, has not brought safety to Palestinians in Gaza. A total of 738 people have perished since October last year under these conditions, underscoring the human cost of continued military operations and territorial advances.

Defense Minister's Statements on Elimination and Emigration

Defense Minister Israel Katz posted on his X account on May 27 that the government would eliminate everyone involved in the October 7 events. He celebrated the announced killing of Hamas military commander Mohammed Odeh, describing him as the fourth such commander sent to meet partners in the depths of hell. Katz further indicated that Hamas would not rule Gaza civilly or militarily and that a plan for voluntary emigration from Gaza would begin at the proper time and manner.

United Nations and UNICEF Warnings

United Nations spokesperson Stephane Dujarric emphasized that 100 percent of Gaza should remain for the Palestinian people and called on Israel to pull back from the occupation along the yellow line. UNICEF spokesman Salim Oweis, speaking from Gaza, described how people are crammed into around 40 percent of the space, sheltering among broken buildings, rubble, and mounting solid waste, which worsens shortages of food, water, and hygiene.

Daily Suffering of Families and Children

Palestinian families in areas like the Tuffah neighborhood now live in tents in fear as the Israeli army deploys nearby. The health crisis among children has become widely apparent, with rising cases of respiratory infections, acute watery diarrhea, and skin diseases affecting more than half of all households. These conditions reflect the profound impact of land seizures on the most vulnerable.
