Alberta and Quebec Premiers Signal Warmer Ties

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith met Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette at the National Assembly in Quebec City on Wednesday. The leaders highlighted opportunities for deeper economic cooperation and shared approaches to provincial autonomy. Despite past political differences, both struck a collegial tone during the discussions.

Focus on Complementary Economies and Trade

Fréchette pointed to the provinces' complementary economies as the sides explored ways to strengthen business ties. Smith noted long-standing trade links and encouraged more movement of Alberta goods through the Port of Quebec. The premiers agreed that supporting each other would build resilience amid uncertainty with the United States.

Shared Interest in Provincial Autonomy

Smith said Alberta is watching legislative developments in Quebec for ideas on asserting provincial jurisdiction. Both governments seek greater autonomy within Canada. The meeting occurs as sovereignty movements in each province aim to build momentum, with Smith planning a referendum on a future sovereignty vote.

Addressing Trade Challenges with the United States

Smith suggested the relationship could earn a nickname such as "Que-Berta." She emphasised the value of interprovincial trade to reduce reliance on the United States. Fréchette later met U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra amid controversy over his social media post about Canada becoming the 51st U.S. state. Both premiers stressed the need for their provinces' interests in ongoing trade talks.

Criticism of Former Federal Minister and Future Plans

Smith criticised former federal environment minister Steven Guilbeault after his resignation following a pipeline agreement between Alberta and the Carney government. She described him as the most destructive politician to national unity. Looking ahead, Alberta plans to boost oil and gas production while expanding imports of Quebec-made goods. Smith also addressed Quebec business leaders, delivering part of her remarks in French.
