Did Trump and Putin Get the Same Treatment in China? Beijing's Diplomatic Balancing Act
Chinese President Xi Jinping rolled out the red carpet for Russia's Vladimir Putin this week with a lavish welcoming ceremony that was nearly identical to the one held for Donald Trump just days earlier. The striking similarity has prompted a question that resonates far beyond Beijing: does China treat all great powers equally, or is there a method to the diplomatic symmetry?
The near-identical ceremonies β same guard of honour, same red carpet, same carefully choreographed photo opportunities β were a deliberate message from Beijing. China is signalling that it does not choose sides in the competition between the United States and Russia. It will maintain relationships with both, on its own terms, regardless of the tensions between them.
This is the essence of Chinese foreign policy: strategic non-alignment combined with pragmatic engagement. China needs the United States for trade and technology. It needs Russia for energy and geopolitical alignment. Alienating either would be counterproductive to Beijing's long-term interests.
The parallel treatment of Trump and Putin also serves a domestic purpose. The Chinese public sees their leader being treated with deference by the leaders of the world's other major powers, reinforcing the legitimacy and prestige of the Chinese Communist Party.
Whether Trump and Putin noticed the similarity is unclear. But the message from Beijing is unmistakable: China will deal with all powers as equals β and expects to be treated the same way in return.
