Rassie Erasmus Backs Springbok Locks and Riley Norton Prospects
**Meta Description:** Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus addresses lock depth concerns ahead of the July 4 England clash, praising Junior Bok captain Riley Norton as a future star while confirming Eben Etzebeth's return and injury updates for the Barbarians and Zimbabwe matches in Gqeberha.

The Lock Depth Question Hitting Home

South African rugby fans know the feeling all too well. When the Springboks line up for a big series, the second row has always been our fortress. Yet with RG Snyman, Ruan Venter and Salmaan Moerat ruled out long-term, the chatter about ageing locks has grown louder ahead of the international window.

Rassie Erasmus addressed those worries head-on this week, making it clear that experience still counts when the players can deliver the physical edge the Boks demand. The build-up to the England clash on July 4 at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha has brought the conversation into sharp focus.

Injury Updates and Returning Warriors

The medical room has taken its toll. Kwagga Smith and Ruan Venter are out for the year, while Malcolm Marx, Eben Etzebeth and Grant Williams have all returned to full fitness. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu is on track to be ready roughly four weeks before the New Zealand series.

Etzebeth is expected to feature against England. Bulls locks Ruan Nortjé and Cobus Wiese will also be available, and Jean Kleyn is working his way back. That gives the coaching group options as they prepare for the Barbarians and SA 'A' versus Zimbabwe double-header in Gqeberha.

Rassie's Straight-Talking on Age and Standards

Rassie did not mince words when asked about the age profile of the locks. "If you are too old and you can't get over the advantage line, or you can't lift in the lineout, or tackle or give us the battle range that we want, then you are probably too old," he said.

On Franco Mostert, now 35, the coach was equally direct. "I really don't think a guy like Franco Mostert's age will influence the way he is playing. It's never been the age profile that worries us." Mostert remains a key figure alongside Lood de Jager, Ruben van Heerden and the exciting 20-year-old Riley Norton for the early matches.

Riley Norton: The 20-Year-Old With the Aura

One name keeps surfacing whenever the future of the position is discussed. Riley Norton, captain of the Junior Springboks, has yet to play a senior game for the Stormers but already carries himself like a seasoned professional.

Rassie was full of praise. "He's definitely a guy who's got a maturity about him… he's not at all 'windgat'. There's an aura about him that he understands what professional rugby is about. I think that's why he's such a great leader for the Junior Boks."

At just 20, Norton sits among a group where most locks are in their early-to-mid 30s. His inclusion in the 51-man squad signals the Boks' intent to blood genuine prospects while still competing at the highest level.

Flank Cover and the Broader Squad Picture

Should injuries strike again, flankers Ben-Jason Dixon and Pieter-Steph du Toit can slide across to lock. That flexibility has long been part of Rassie's planning and remains vital with the Barbarians and Zimbabwe fixtures looming in Gqeberha on June 20.

The coach noted the positive problem of depth: "We've actually got a lot of players available and the challenge at the moment is figuring out how to give everyone game time." Ten youngsters have also been selected for the Junior World Champs, underlining the pipeline.

Looking Ahead to England, Scotland and the All Blacks

The Boks defend their World Cup title with the next global tournament set for Australia in 2027. First, though, comes the July 4 England Test, followed by Scotland and Wales in the Nations Championship, before the first Test against the All Blacks on August 21.

Uncapped players in camp include Yaqeen Ahmed, Luan Giliomee, Vusi Moyo, Riley Norton and several others. Rassie summed up the mood: "We have a bunch of youngsters coming through that are well-drilled professionals."

The energy around the squad is unmistakable. South African rugby has always thrived when experience and youth blend on the same field, and the current window offers exactly that mix.
