More Springbok caps will boost Lions growth after breakthrough URC campaign
The Lions posted their best ever United Rugby Championship campaign, reaching the playoffs for the first time in five seasons. Nine players received Springbok alignment camp invites, with captain Francke Horn in line for a debut cap.
Lions Celebrate Breakthrough URC Season
The Lions delivered their best ever United Rugby Championship campaign last weekend, reaching the top eight for the first time in five seasons and finishing seventh to earn a spot in the play-offs. Their run ended in the quarterfinals against defending champions Leinster, yet the Joburg-based side has generated real excitement with this achievement.
Alignment Camps Spark National Interest
The Springboks held two alignment camps ahead of their season, which starts later this month with a match against the Barbarians in Gqeberha followed by the Nations Championship in July against England, Scotland and Wales. Nine Lions players received invites across the camps, creating fresh hope that more local talent could earn Springbok experience and help the team keep growing.
Francke Horn Eyes First Bok Cap
Lions captain and eighthman Francke Horn stands out after his invitation to the second alignment camp two weeks ago, putting him in line for a potential first Springbok cap. Other players like Siba Mahashe and Henco van Wyk joined him in the second camp, adding to the growing list of Lions names on the national radar.
Established Players and New Faces
Morne van den Berg has become an established member of the Bok squad, while Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Ruan Venter and Quan Horn have already made their debuts. Francke Horn, Henco van Wyk, Batho Hlekani, Siba Mahashe and Haashim Pead are still waiting for their first appearances, and the coming international window offers them a real shot, especially with the SA A team playing Zimbabwe on the same day as the Barbarians clash.
Injuries and Bans Create Selection Challenges
Asenathi Ntlabakanye received an 18-month doping ban and will miss the next year and a half. Ruan Venter and Morne van den Berg suffered serious injuries that rule them out until at least the end of the year. Despite these setbacks, the remaining six Lions players all have opportunities to feature in the upcoming campaign.
Coach Van Rooyen Praises Growing Representation
Lions coach Ivan van Rooyen expressed satisfaction with the national setup involvement, noting that two or three seasons ago only one or two players reached the alignment camps and now eight or nine are involved. He highlighted how the experience strengthens the whole group and called the workload management a good problem to have.
