Heavy Rains Threaten to Delay Search for Two Missing in Laos Cave
Five rescued, two still missing after flash flood traps villagers in Laos cave. Thai and international divers join search as heavy rains threaten to delay efforts.
Rescue Efforts Unfold in Laos Flooded Cave
Heavy rains threatened to delay the search for two people still missing in a flooded cave in Laos on Sunday, after the rescue of five others who had been trapped underground for over a week. In total, eight villagers entered the cave system last week to look for valuable minerals. One managed to escape and alert authorities, while the other seven were trapped by a flash flood. Five have now been rescued, leaving two still unaccounted for.
International Teams Join Laos and Thailand
Rescue teams from Laos and neighboring Thailand worked together at the site in a rugged area in the central province of Xaisomboun, about 120 kilometers north of the capital, Vientiane. Divers from Finland, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, France and Australia also joined the effort. Several of these rescuers had previously taken part in the 2018 cave rescue in northern Thailand that saved 12 schoolboys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave.
Divers Share Details According to the Associated Press
Finnish diver Mikko Paasi, one of the first international rescuers to arrive, told the Associated Press that rains had filled the cave up to the second chamber. Pumps were needed to lower the water level before divers could enter further. Rescuers have navigated more than 200 meters into the cave and discovered five chambers in the system. The five rescued people were found in the fifth chamber.
Malaysian diver Lee Kian Lie, also taking part in the operation, told the Associated Press on Sunday that the rescued men were being treated at a local hospital and were doing well. The team interviewed them about how the deeper part of the cave looks. They planned to continue the search based on that information.
Survivors Describe Possible Passage
According to the Associated Press, Mikko Paasi reported that the survivors mentioned a narrow crack in the fifth chamber that could lead to a deeper part of the cave system. This area had not yet been checked. The information gave hope that a sixth chamber might exist beyond the crack.
Emotional Moments at Cave Entrance
The five rescued men were identified by their first names as Khamla, Mued, Ee, Ing and Laen. The first man was safely evacuated on Friday, guided through a narrow flooded passage by an expert diver. The remaining four left the cave on Saturday after the water receded enough for them to walk out. Videos posted online by rescuers showed the men emerging one by one, with some collapsing at the entrance and being hugged by workers. Others were seen on stretchers wrapped in foil blankets and fitted with oxygen masks before transport from the site.
Relevance for Thai Communities
Thai rescue teams have worked alongside Laos authorities in Xaisomboun province, building on their experience from the 2018 operation in northern Thailand. This shared effort highlights ongoing cooperation between the two countries in times of crisis and the value of lessons learned from past cave rescues near the Thai-Lao border regions.
