Grammy Academy Unveils New Asian Pop Category for 69th Awards
The Recording Academy announced five new award categories in June 2026 for the 69th Grammy Awards, including a dedicated Asian pop music performance category that will recognize T-pop from Thailand alongside K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop.
The Recording Academy announced five new award categories in June 2026 for the 69th Grammy Awards ceremony scheduled for 2027. The best Asian pop music performance category will recognize releases in K-pop, J-pop, C-pop, and T-pop from Thailand. The award goes directly to the performer.
Thai Pop Artists from Bangkok and Isaan Gain Recognition Path
T-pop acts based in Bangkok now have a dedicated slot alongside artists from Isaan communities in northeastern Thailand. Many T-pop releases draw from mor lam rhythms and luk thung melodies performed at temple fairs in Khon Kaen and Udon Thani provinces. This category places Thai performers on equal footing with other Asian genres for the first time.
Additional Categories Expand Music Fields
A best traditional pop vocal performance category covers music that cannot properly be intermingled with present forms of pop music. A best Latin song category recognizes songwriters for work recorded predominantly in Spanish. The R&B field gains a best collaboration or duo/group performance award and a reimagined best R&B solo performance category. Folk music splits into best contemporary folk album and best traditional folk album.
Eligibility Rules Updated for New Artist Category
Artists may now submit up to four times for best new artist, up from three. Artists with a previous Grammy nomination remain ineligible. These changes reflect longer timelines for building mainstream momentum across global markets including Southeast Asia.
ASEAN Cultural Exchange Strengthened Through Ministry Ties
The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs has supported ASEAN cultural exchange programs that connect musicians from Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Thai artists often perform at community events held at Buddhist temples in Bangkok such as Wat Arun and Wat Pho, where traditional percussion and vocal styles meet contemporary production. These grounded practices continue to shape T-pop recordings eligible for the new category.
Academy CEO Highlights 2027 Ceremony
"2027 is going to be an amazing year for the Grammy Awards, and one that reflects the extraordinary growth we're seeing across music," said Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason jr. The announcement positions the 69th Grammy Awards to include broader representation from Asian music communities.
