Stephen Buyer just walked free on Trump's signature. Another insider trader gets the golden pass.
Folks, let's not sugarcoat it. A former nine-term congressman convicted of cashing in on his connections gets a presidential pardon while the rest of us still play by the rules. That's not justice. That's the system winking at itself in the mirror.
The Man Who Served Nine Terms and Then Served Himself
Stephen Buyer represented Indiana's 4th and 5th districts from 1993 to 2011. Nine terms. Plenty of time to learn exactly how Washington really works. After leaving office he set up a consulting shop and started advising tech companies on matters that looked a lot like the insider information he once had access to as a lawmaker.
Judge Richard J. Leonard didn't buy the "I was just networking" defense. In March 2023 a jury convicted Buyer on four counts of insider trading. The sentence: 22 months in federal prison. The SEC piled on civil charges too. This wasn't a close call. The evidence was there.
Twenty-Two Months Was Already a Light Tap on the Wrist
Insider trading by a former member of Congress should shake people up. Instead, the sentence was modest. Now even that modest sentence has been erased. The message is loud: if you're connected enough, the rules are suggestions.
Here's the thing—ordinary Americans go to prison for far less. Steal a few thousand from a cash register and the system throws the book. Trade on congressional knowledge and suddenly friends in high places start making calls.
Boehner and the Old Boys Network Made It Happen
According to the Washington Times, former House Speaker John Boehner and other Republicans personally lobbied Trump for this pardon. That's how the machine works. You serve your time in the club, and the club takes care of you when things go sideways.
Buyer wasn't some random donor. He was one of them. The revolving door spins, the favors get called in, and suddenly a felony conviction becomes a footnote.
The Timing Is Impossible to Ignore
This pardon lands while President Trump himself faces ongoing scrutiny over his own business entanglements. The Independent has been tracking those questions for months. So we're supposed to believe the man signing the pardon has no skin in the game when it comes to questions of conflicts and self-dealing? Come on.
The optics are terrible because the optics are accurate. Power protects power. That's the story here, not some noble act of mercy.
What This Really Says About the Whole Rotten Setup
Every time a connected person gets a pass, regular citizens lose a little more faith that the law applies to everyone. Insider trading by a former congressman isn't a victimless crime. It distorts markets and tells everyday investors the table is rigged.
Buyer had nine terms to push for stronger ethics rules. Instead he used the knowledge he gained in those terms to enrich himself. Now the conviction is gone. The system didn't even have to pretend very hard.
Here's What You Actually Do About It
Call your representatives. Tell them you're watching every single one of these pardons and every ethics loophole that still exists. Demand real bans on former members of Congress lobbying or consulting in the sectors they once oversaw. Support legislation that closes the revolving door instead of widening it.
Share this story. Not because one man's pardon changes everything, but because the pattern keeps repeating. If enough people treat these moves as normal, they become normal. They already have.
Stay loud. Stay informed. And remember: the people who write the rules are usually the first ones to find the exits when the rules come back to bite them.
