Chief constable warns online abusers targeting officers and families will face prosecution after Southampton murder case
Hampshire Chief Constable Alexis Boon warns online abusers threatening police officers and their families will face prosecution after the Henry Nowak murder case.
Chief Constable Issues Stark Warning
Hampshire Constabulary's chief constable, Alexis Boon, has delivered a firm message that individuals directing threats to life and harm against his officers or their families may face prosecution. He described the current level of abuse directed at the force as incredible, noting its rise both online and amid recent disorder in Southampton.
Abuse Linked to Sentencing in Murder Case
The warnings follow the sentencing of Vickrum Digwa for the murder of Henry Nowak. Mr Boon stated that threats and violence are being exploited to advance particular agendas by capitalising on an appalling tragedy. The force remains committed to investigating all instances of online abuse that include threats to life or threats to harm.
Impact on Officers and Their Families
Addressing the Press Association, Mr Boon explained that divisive rhetoric has led to innocent police officers across his force being targeted with threats, alongside social media abuse aimed at their families. He characterised the situation as totally unacceptable and a symptom of people misusing the tragedy for their own purposes.
Robust Response to Disorder in Portswood
Mr Boon commended his officers for their brave handling of disturbances in the Portswood area of Southampton, near the location where Mr Nowak died. Two people were arrested during the events, with further arrests expected following a post-incident investigation. Officers faced missiles and projectiles yet maintained a strong policing presence.
Rejection of Two-Tier Policing Claims and Broader Context
Responding to suggestions of two-tier policing, Mr Boon affirmed that he does not recognise such practices. He emphasised that officers serve all communities fairly and impartially in line with founding principles of policing without fear or favour. An investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct into the handling of the incident involving Mr Nowak will examine potential changes to training and procedures, with a focus on learning from all evidence and officer accounts.
Message to the Family of Henry Nowak
In a direct address to Mr Nowak's family, Mr Boon expressed understanding of their distress and noted the apologies already issued. He described the events as a tragedy from start to finish and welcomed the life imprisonment sentence handed to the perpetrator. The murder has prompted demonstrations and clashes between protesters and police in Southampton.
