Eid el-Kabir: Abdulsalami Urges Nigerian Politicians to Embrace Issue-Based Politics
Former Nigerian Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar has used the occasion of Eid el-Kabir to call on the country's politicians to embrace issue-based politics, urging them to focus on the problems facing ordinary Nigerians rather than personal attacks and divisive rhetoric.
"Eid is a time of reflection and sacrifice," Abdulsalami said in his message. "I urge our political leaders to reflect on the true meaning of service and to prioritise the welfare of the people above personal ambition."
The call comes at a critical moment in Nigeria's political calendar, with parties preparing for primaries and the general election approaching. The political atmosphere has been charged, with accusations, counter-accusations, and the usual drama that accompanies election season in Africa's most populous nation.
Abdulsalami, who oversaw Nigeria's transition to civilian rule in 1999, is one of the country's most respected elder statesmen. His voice carries weight across the political spectrum, and his message of unity and issue-based politics resonates with many Nigerians who are weary of the tribal and religious divisions that often characterise electoral contests.
The challenge, of course, is translating that message into action. In a political system where access to power often depends on patronage networks, ethnic blocs, and financial muscle, the call for issue-based politics is easier made than implemented. But every election cycle brings new opportunities for change, and Abdulsalami's words may encourage a more substantive debate.
For the millions of Nigerians celebrating Eid, the hope is that the spirit of sacrifice and community extends to the political arena.
