Lagos to Barbados: Nigerian Carrier Makes History With First Direct Flight
Nigerian carrier Air Peace has made history, touching down in Barbados with the first direct flight from Lagos to the Caribbean.
The milestone flight marks a new chapter in the relationship between Africa and the Caribbean, two regions whose connections run deep through shared history, culture, and ancestry. For decades, travellers between West Africa and the Caribbean have had to endure long layovers in Europe or North America. Now, for the first time, they can fly direct.
The flight, which took off from Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and landed at Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados, was greeted with a traditional water cannon salute and celebrations on the tarmac. Passengers were welcomed with music, flowers, and the unmistakable warmth of Caribbean hospitality.
Barbados officials hailed the new route as a game-changer for tourism and business ties between Africa and the Caribbean. "This is more than a flight," said a Barbados tourism official. "This is a bridge between continents, a reconnection of families, and an economic opportunity for both sides."
Air Peace has indicated it plans to expand the service if demand warrants it, potentially adding routes to other Caribbean destinations. For the Caribbean, the direct link to Africa represents a massive opportunity to tap into a growing travel market that has been historically underserved.
