'No One Can Say' Origin of Drone That Crashed in Romania, Putin Says

Romanian Report of Drone Crash

Bucharest reported on 4 December that fragments of a Russian-made Geran-2 drone were recovered in the eastern county of Tulcea after the unmanned aerial vehicle entered Romanian airspace from Ukraine the previous night. Romanian officials described the incursion as a serious and irresponsible escalation by Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that no one can say with certainty where the drone originated.

Details of the Detection and Recovery

The Romanian Ministry of National Defence said the drone was detected by radar at approximately 23:40 local time on 3 December and crashed in a rural area near the Danube Delta. No injuries or damage to infrastructure were reported. Defence Minister Angel Tîlvăr told reporters in Bucharest that the wreckage matched the Geran-2, an Iranian-designed Shahed-136 variant supplied to Russia and used extensively in strikes against Ukraine.

Recovered Components and NATO Involvement

Romanian authorities recovered engine components, wing fragments and guidance-system parts bearing Cyrillic markings consistent with Geran-2 production. NATO’s Allied Air Command in Ramstein confirmed that Romanian F-16s were scrambled but did not engage the aircraft after it lost altitude. The incident occurred roughly 80 kilometres from the Ukrainian border city of Izmail, a frequent target of Russian long-range strikes.

Background on the Geran-2

The Geran-2 has a range of approximately 1,000–1,500 kilometres and carries a 40-kilogram warhead. Russia began serial production of the type in 2022 at facilities in the Tatarstan region, according to open-source intelligence assessments cited by the Ukrainian General Staff.

Prior Airspace Violations

Romania, a NATO member since 2004, has recorded several previous airspace violations involving unidentified drones since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. In each prior case, Bucharest requested clarification through diplomatic channels rather than public attribution.
