Israel Claims Killing of Newly Appointed Hamas Military Chief in Gaza Strike
Israel said on Wednesday that it had killed the newly appointed head of Hamas's military wing, the Qassam Brigades, in an airstrike on Gaza City β the latest in a relentless campaign to decapitate the organisation's leadership.
The strike, which hit a residential building in the heart of Gaza City, reportedly killed the commander just days after he assumed his post following the killing of his predecessor. If confirmed, it would mark the third successive Hamas military chief to be eliminated by Israeli forces within a matter of weeks.
The Israeli military described the operation as a precise intelligence-driven strike. Palestinian officials confirmed multiple casualties but did not immediately identify the dead. The area around the targeted building was cordoned off as rescue workers searched through the rubble.
This is the brutal logic of the current campaign: Israel believes that killing Hamas leaders will degrade the organisation's capabilities and force it to agree to a ceasefire. Hamas, in turn, argues that it has a deep bench of commanders ready to replace any that are killed, and that assassination campaigns only strengthen its resolve.
History suggests that targeted killings rarely produce lasting strategic results. Hamas has proven remarkably resilient, rebuilding its command structures even after devastating losses. What the strikes do achieve is a steady accumulation of Palestinian casualties and grievances that will fuel the next cycle of violence.
If the goal is to end the fighting, the strategy of decapitation has not worked. Perhaps it is time to try something different.
