Ukrainian Envoy Thanks Thailand And Says the Kingdom Can Do Even More
**Ukrainian Envoy Thanks Thailand And Says the Kingdom Can Do Even More** Viktor Semenov, chargé d’affaires at the Embassy of Ukraine in Thailand, on Friday thanked the Thai government for its consistent support of Ukrainian sovereignty, international law and the UN Charter, while noting that additional steps remain possible as Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine enters its fifth year. The remarks were delivered during a meeting with Thai officials and media in Bangkok. Semenov stated that Ukraine is “really grateful” for Thailand’s voting record at the United Nations and its humanitarian contributions, yet added that further engagement on specific issues would strengthen bilateral cooperation.

The Envoy’s Remarks

Speaking at the Ukrainian Embassy, Semenov highlighted Thailand’s positions in successive UN General Assembly resolutions that affirm Ukraine’s territorial integrity. He cited Thailand’s affirmative votes on resolutions adopted in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 that condemned the use of force against Ukraine and called for withdrawal of Russian forces. “Thailand has stood with the majority of UN member states in upholding the principles of the Charter,” Semenov said. He did not specify new requests but indicated that expanded humanitarian assistance and continued diplomatic coordination would be welcomed. The envoy’s comments were conveyed to the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs earlier in the week. No immediate Thai response was issued on Friday, consistent with Bangkok’s practice of addressing such matters through formal diplomatic channels.

Thailand’s Record of Support

Thailand has maintained a policy of supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty while preserving diplomatic and economic relations with Russia. In February 2022, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement expressing concern over the invasion and urging respect for international law. Since then, Thailand has contributed medical supplies and participated in multilateral humanitarian appeals coordinated through the United Nations. Thai representatives have joined consensus statements at ASEAN-related meetings that reference the need for a peaceful resolution based on the UN Charter. Thailand has not joined sanctions regimes imposed by the United States, European Union or other partners, citing its independent foreign policy and existing trade links in energy and fertiliser sectors.

Background on the Conflict

Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022. The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission has documented civilian casualties exceeding 10,000 confirmed deaths by early 2026, with millions of Ukrainians displaced internally or as refugees. The International Court of Justice and multiple UN General Assembly resolutions have addressed questions of territorial integrity and the prohibition on the acquisition of territory by force. Thailand established diplomatic relations with Ukraine in 1992. Annual bilateral trade has remained modest, primarily in agricultural products and machinery. Cultural and educational exchanges have continued at a limited scale through university partnerships.

Response from Thai Authorities

The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated that its position is guided by the principles of the UN Charter and ASEAN’s emphasis on peaceful dispute settlement. Officials have previously stated that Thailand provides humanitarian assistance on a case-by-case basis and supports inclusive dialogue processes. No new commitments were announced following Semenov’s remarks.

Implications and Next Steps

Continued coordination between the two embassies is expected on consular and humanitarian matters. Ukraine has indicated interest in further Thai participation in international forums addressing reconstruction and food-security issues linked to the Black Sea region. Thailand’s upcoming diplomatic calendar includes UN General Assembly sessions where related resolutions may again be considered. Further updates will be provided as official communications between the governments progress.
