The New World screwworm, scientifically known as Cochliomyia hominivorax, follows a rapid life cycle that begins when adult females lay batches of up to 400 eggs at the edges of open wounds on warm-blooded animals. Within twenty-four hours the eggs hatch into larvae that burrow into living tissue, feeding voraciously for five to seven days before dropping to the ground to pupate; adults emerge roughly one week later, ready to mate and restart the cycle. This progression allows infestations to escalate within days, distinguishing the species from other blowflies that typically target only necrotic tissue.
Diagnosis relies on visual inspection of wounds for the characteristic “screwworm” larvae, which possess distinctive spines and a reddish-brown colour, often confirmed through laboratory analysis by veterinary services. In cattle and other livestock, symptoms include restlessness, reduced appetite, foul-smelling discharge from wounds, and rapid weight loss; untreated cases in young calves or weakened animals carry mortality rates exceeding seventy per cent within two weeks. Any prolonged restriction could delay genetic improvement programmes and force greater dependence on more expensive European or Australian sources.
Informal trade between islands, including the movement of goats and working animals via small vessels, heightens the risk of reintroduction. Should the screwworm establish itself, local markets would likely see immediate rises in beef, milk and goat meat prices, compounding the already elevated food import bills that account for more than twenty-five per cent of household expenditure in many CARICOM states. Families already coping with inflation would face further pressure on staple proteins essential for nutrition.
Regional cooperation through the Caribbean Agricultural Health and Food Safety Agency could facilitate shared surveillance and rapid response capacity, protecting both commercial producers and smallholders whose livelihoods underpin rural economies across the islands.
The Sterile Insect Technique: A Weapon Against the Parasite
The main defence remains the sterile insect technique, in which millions of laboratory-reared male flies are sterilised and released to mate with wild females, gradually reducing the population. Rising temperatures also intensify rainfall variability, creating more frequent wound opportunities through flooding and heat stress that further favour the parasite’s establishment.
Caribbean governments must therefore integrate climate adaptation into agricultural policy, investing in regional diagnostic hubs and farmer training to safeguard food production against an expanding suite of tropical threats linked directly to global warming.

Agriculture ministries across CARICOM are expected to issue updated import guidelines and strengthen surveillance at ports and farms in the coming weeks.
