Teen sensation Fonseca stuns Djokovic at French Open
Brazilian teenager João Fonseca defeated Novak Djokovic 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 in the third round of the French Open on Friday at Stade Roland-Garros in Paris, ending the Serbian player’s participation in the tournament. Fonseca, aged 18, advanced to the fourth round of a Grand Slam event for the first time.
The match lasted two hours and 41 minutes on Court Philippe-Chatrier. Fonseca converted five of eight break-point opportunities while limiting Djokovic to a 48 percent success rate on first-serve points. Fonseca broke Djokovic’s serve in the fifth game of the opening set after the Serbian committed two unforced errors on backhand returns. In the second set, Fonseca saved two break points in the eighth game before breaking in the eleventh game to take a 6-5 lead. He closed the set on his serve. The third set followed a similar pattern, with Fonseca securing the only break in the fourth game. Djokovic, who entered the match with a 20-2 record at Roland-Garros, finished with 27 unforced errors.
