Rescue Teams Search for Two Missing in Laos Cave as Rains Threaten Delays
Thai and international rescue teams saved five villagers from a flooded cave in Xaisomboun, Laos, as heavy rains threaten to delay the search for two still missing.
Rescue Teams Unite in Xaisomboun Province
Rescue teams from Laos and Thailand worked together this past week in the rugged central province of Xaisomboun, 120 kilometers north of Vientiane, after seven villagers became trapped in a flooded cave while searching for valuable minerals. One villager escaped and alerted authorities, leading to the joint operation that has already brought five men to safety.
Thai Divers Draw on Tham Luang Experience
Several Thai rescuers who joined the Laos effort had previously taken part in the 2018 rescue of twelve schoolboys and their coach from the flooded Tham Luang cave in northern Thailand's Chiang Rai province. Their presence in Xaisomboun reflects the continuing cooperation between the two neighboring countries when communities face sudden flooding.
Rains Raise Water Levels in the Cave
Heavy rains on Sunday filled the cave up to the second chamber, forcing divers to wait until pumps can lower the water before they can continue searching for the two remaining villagers. Finnish diver Mikko Paasi, one of the first international rescuers on site, confirmed that entry remains blocked until water levels drop.
Five Men Found in the Fifth Chamber
Rescuers navigated more than 200 meters into the cave system and identified five chambers. The five rescued men, identified as Khamla, Mued, Ee, Ing and Laen, were located in the fifth chamber. They told interviewers about a narrow crack that may lead to a possible sixth chamber, offering a new path for the ongoing search.
Evacuations Completed Over Two Days
The five men were first reached on Wednesday. The first man was guided out on Friday by an expert diver through a narrow flooded passage. The remaining four walked out on their own on Saturday once the water receded. They are now recovering at a local hospital and are reported to be doing well.
Emotional Scenes at the Cave Entrance
Videos posted by rescuers on Saturday captured the moment the men emerged one by one. Some collapsed at the entrance and were embraced by workers who cried with joy. The men were later seen on stretchers, wrapped in foil blankets and wearing oxygen masks before being transported for medical care.
Hope Remains for the Two Missing Villagers
Malaysian diver Lee Kian Lie noted that the rescued men provided details about the deeper sections of the cave. With the information they shared, teams from Finland, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, France and Australia plan to continue the search once the water recedes, keeping alive the possibility of reaching the sixth chamber.
