Fashion Promised Diversity. The Runways Just Showed Us the Truth
If you watched the Fall-Winter 2023 runways and felt like something was... off... you weren't imagining it. Fashion critics are calling it "a definitive backslide" β and the trend has nothing to do with ruffles or pleated skirts.
What we're seeing on the catwalks is a retreat from the progress the industry claimed to be making. After years of runway diversity pledges, size-inclusive messaging, and sustainability promises, the Fall-Winter collections told a different story.
The Numbers Don't Lie
Studies of runway casting show that diversity numbers have actually declined from their peaks in 2020-2021. The percentage of models of color dropped. Plus-size representation, which was already minimal, shrank further. And the sustainability talking points that were everywhere a few seasons ago? Barely mentioned.
The industry made big promises during the racial justice protests of 2020. Fashion houses issued statements, created diversity initiatives, and pledged to do better. But when the spotlight moved elsewhere, many of those commitments quietly faded.
Why This Happens
Fashion is a notoriously trend-driven industry β and that applies to its values too. When diversity is trending, brands jump on it. When sustainability is hot, everyone's an eco-warrior. But maintaining those commitments requires real structural change, not just marketing campaigns. It means changing who's in charge, who gets funding, and whose voices are heard.
That kind of change is hard. And expensive. And uncomfortable for the people at the top.
The Hope
Not everyone is backsliding. Smaller designers and independent brands are still pushing boundaries. And consumers are getting savvier β they can tell when a brand is genuinely committed versus when they're just following a trend.
The fashion industry has a long history of promising progress and then forgetting about it. But if consumers keep paying attention, keep demanding better, maybe this time will be different. ππ
