A Hippo Swallowed Him Waist-Deep. Here's How He Survived

Paul Templer was living his best life as a river guide in Zimbabwe when a hippo attacked him. And when I say attacked, I mean the hippo swallowed the upper half of his body.

Yes, you read that right. A hippo. Swallowed him. Up to his waist. And he survived to tell the tale.

Hippos are responsible for more human deaths in Africa than lions, leopards, and crocodiles combined. They're herbivores, but they're fiercely territorial and aggressive. And when a hippo decides you're a threat, those massive jaws — which can open to 150 degrees — become weapons.

The Attack

Templer was guiding a group on the Zambezi River when a hippo surfaced right next to his canoe. Before he could react, the animal had him. He describes being pulled underwater, the hippo's jaws clamped around his torso, the crushing pressure as the animal shook him like a ragdoll.

"I was up to my waist down a hippo's throat," Templer told interviewers. Most people would have panicked. Templer did something remarkable: he stayed calm and thought his way out.

His Survival Lessons

Templer has since become a motivational speaker, and his advice is surprisingly practical:

  • Stay calm. Panic burns oxygen and clouds your thinking. In a life-or-death situation, calm is your superpower.
  • Know your environment. Hippos are most dangerous in shallow water where they feel trapped. The same principle applies to any dangerous situation — understanding the terrain gives you an advantage.
  • Never give up. Templer survived because he kept fighting, kept thinking, and refused to accept that this was how his story ended.

Templer eventually escaped with severe injuries but alive. He went on to write a book, travel the world, and share his story of survival. And his advice? It applies to more than just hippo attacks. Life throws plenty of jaws at you. The trick is to keep fighting until you get free.
