Alfa Romeo's Big Comeback: New SUV and a Hatchback to Rival the Golf on the Way
Alfa Romeo is planning a major comeback, with not only updated versions of current models but a return to the hatchback segment it abandoned six years ago. And petrolheads, this one is for you.
The iconic Italian brand, known for its passionate design and driver-focused engineering, confirmed at parent company Stellantis's recent Investor Day that its "Fastlane 2030" plan involves three new models between now and 2030. Among them: a new SUV and a revived hatchback that will go head-to-head with the Volkswagen Golf.
For South African car enthusiasts, this is exciting news. The Alfa Romeo Giulietta was a beloved model in the local market before it was discontinued, and the prospect of a new hatchback wearing the famous Alfa badge has generated serious buzz. The new SUV, meanwhile, will target the premium mid-size segment dominated by the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. For South Africa, where SUVs dominate the new car market, this could be the volume seller Alfa desperately needs.
Alfa Romeo's return to form has been a work in progress. The Giulia and Stelvio proved the brand could still build world-class cars, but sales never reached the levels that the parent company hoped for. With the new models, Alfa is betting that electrification and a sharper product focus will finally deliver the commercial success that has eluded it for years.
If the new models capture even a fraction of the magic of Alfa's greatest hits β the 1960s Giulia Sprint GT, the 1990s 155, the 4C β South African roads will be a more beautiful place.
