Macron Condemns Israel's South Lebanon Escalation as Israeli Forces Seize Beaufort Castle

Macron's Direct Condemnation of the Escalation

France's President Emmanuel Macron stated that nothing justifies the major escalation in south Lebanon following the expansion of Israeli ground operations. His comments came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced control over Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon.

Israeli Forces' Advance into Southern Lebanon

Israeli forces seized the strategic Beaufort Castle, known in Arabic as Qalaat al-Shaqif, marking the deepest incursion into the area in more than two decades. This action follows the period when Israeli troops maintained a security zone in southern Lebanon from 1982 until their withdrawal in 2000.

France's Push for Emergency International Action

At France's request, the U.N. Security Council scheduled an emergency meeting for Monday to address the Israeli army's expanding operations in Lebanon. Macron emphasized France's ongoing support for Lebanese authorities in restoring state sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Engagement with Regional Leaders

Macron held discussions with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Oman's Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, United Arab Emirates President Mohammed bin Zayed, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. These talks focused on reaching a quick agreement between the United States and Iran.

Broader Calls for Ceasefire and Stability

Macron described regional stability as beginning in Lebanon, where it is urgent that all weapons fall silent permanently. He called for an immediate ceasefire as a priority between the United States and Iran, along with the unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz in line with international law.

France's Role in Future Diplomatic Efforts

Macron indicated that talks should continue toward a comprehensive agreement covering nuclear and ballistic programs as well as regional stability. France stands ready to assist in restoring maritime traffic through an independent multinational mission established with the United Kingdom.
