Iran Says 'Low' Possibility of Return to War With US — But Fragile Ceasefire Holds

Iran has stated that the possibility of a return to war with the United States is "low," according to Iranian officials, offering a rare glimmer of optimism in a conflict that has devastated the region and disrupted global energy markets.

The statement came a day after Iran accused the United States of breaching the ceasefire that has been in place since April. The ceasefire, while fragile, has held despite numerous violations and accusations from both sides. The reduction in hostilities has allowed for some humanitarian relief and diplomatic movement, though a comprehensive peace deal remains elusive.

For Japan, the Iran-US conflict is of particular concern. Japan imports the vast majority of its oil from the Middle East, and the Strait of Hormuz — the waterway at the centre of the conflict — is the chokepoint through which much of that oil passes. Any escalation that threatens the strait would have immediate and severe consequences for the Japanese economy.

The "low" probability assessment from Tehran is encouraging, but it is far from a guarantee. The conflict has been characterised by sudden escalations and unexpected turns. Both sides have reasons to negotiate and reasons to fight, and the calculus can change overnight.

For now, the ceasefire holds, the strait remains open, and Japan's energy supply lines remain intact. But the tension is far from resolved, and the world watches anxiously for the next development.
