DR Congo Faces 'Catastrophic Collision' of Ebola and Conflict, WHO Warns

The World Health Organization has issued an urgent warning: the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is facing a "catastrophic collision" of disease and conflict, with fighting in affected areas hampering efforts to stop the spread.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the situation is among the most complex the organisation has ever faced. "We are dealing with a lethal virus in a war zone," he said. "Every day that the fighting continues, the virus gains ground."

The outbreak has already claimed dozens of lives, and the number of confirmed cases is rising rapidly. Health workers are struggling to reach affected communities, administer vaccines, and trace contacts β€” the basic tools of outbreak control β€” because the areas where the virus is spreading are also active combat zones.

This is the nightmare scenario that global health experts have been warning about for years: a highly contagious and deadly pathogen emerging in a region where the state has lost control. The combination of Ebola and armed conflict creates conditions that could allow the virus to spread far beyond the current epicentre.

The WHO has called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire to allow health workers to do their jobs. The UN Security Council is expected to discuss the situation in the coming days. But as the diplomatic machinery grinds into motion, people are dying.

For Africa, the DRC outbreak is a test β€” of the continent's health systems, of international solidarity, and of the collective will to stop a crisis before it becomes a catastrophe.
