Six South Korean opposition parties on Wednesday (Dec 4) submitted a Bill in parliament to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol, less than a day after he declared martial law before reversing the move hours later. Yoon’s shock move sparked protests and political turmoil in Asia’s fourth-largest economy. Mason Richey, associate professor of international politics at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, tells CNA’s East Asia Tonight what could have motivated Yoon. He also says the public and lawmakers are unlikely to view the president’s actions as in good faith or constitutional.
