In an era of prolonged military clashes, the Bashar Al Assad regime in Syria had an unusually quick collapse recently. Assad was toppled in a lightning offensive by the Hayat Tahrir Al Sham group which seized capital Damascus on December 8. But the threat of worsening warfare is not over yet. After Assad's fall, fears of a Syria-Israel war are rising. Israel had been occasionally conducting airstrikes on Syria ever since the Gaza war began in October 2023. But in the two days following Assad's ouster, the Israeli military hit Syria nearly 500 times, and even bombed its naval fleet. On top of this, Israeli troops entered Syria, crossing a demilitarised buffer zone for the first time in half a century. Some reports suggested that the IDF was just 25 kilometres away from Syria's capital city. As Israel tries to capitalise on the crisis in its neighbourhood, will Hayat Tahrir Al Sham decide to take on the IDF to reinforce its fledgling rule? If so, would the HTS be able to handle the technologically-superior Israeli military? Or will the IDF struggle against the HTS like it has against Hamas and Hezbollah?
