- How the justice system fails abused women — Friday 15 May 2026
- Labour MP Naz Shah has spoken candidly about the failures of the British justice system in protecting women who endure years of domestic abuse. In a new episode of the BBC podcast Ways to Change the World, the Bradford West politician tells Krishnan Guru-Murthy how her mother received a life sentence for killing the man who had subjected her to prolonged violence. Shah campaigned successfully for her mother’s eventual release, drawing on the case to highlight how courts often overlook the cumulative trauma faced by victims.
Her memoir Honoured charts a childhood marked by forced marriage, poverty and repeated abuse within the family. Shah explains that these experiences propelled her into politics, where she has pressed for better recognition of coercive control and the long-term effects of domestic violence on survivors. The discussion comes as ministers review sentencing guidelines following several high-profile cases in which women who killed their abusers struggled to secure reduced terms on appeal.
Campaigners argue that Britain’s legal framework still places too great a burden on victims to prove imminent danger rather than sustained psychological harm. Shah’s account underscores the need for wider training of judges and prosecutors, alongside improved support services outside London and other major cities. The interview offers a personal lens on reforms that many believe are long overdue if the system is to treat abused women with greater fairness. - Watch the full video from Channel 4 News below.

- Gotas K.O. - Lucha por volver a la vida (2/2) | DW Documental — Friday 15 May 2026
- A growing global crisis involving colorless and tasteless knockout drops is leaving victims vulnerable to sexual assault, theft, and lasting trauma, as highlighted in a new DW documentary. These substances, often slipped into drinks without detection, cause rapid loss of consciousness and memory gaps, a tactic known as chemical submission. Victims like Kate describe waking up with the horrific realization of rape, while many others never report the crimes due to shame or fear of disbelief. The problem spans borders, affecting men and women in cities from Berlin to London and beyond, where nightlife and social drinking create easy opportunities for predators.
Experts warn that the scale of these attacks remains severely underestimated. Jochen Link, a victims' advocate with the German organization Weißer Ring, notes that cases often go unrecognized even when victims recall little alcohol consumption. Substances range from recreational drugs to common sedatives, yet detection proves nearly impossible as they metabolize quickly in the body. Research at Berlin's Charité Hospital aims to identify the most frequent agents, but prosecution rates stay low, as seen in the case of Nina, whose rape report yielded evidence but never reached trial.
Beyond stricter penalties, advocates call for broader societal shifts to support survivors and prevent attacks. The documentary underscores that awareness must extend globally, urging communities, policymakers, and individuals to confront the hidden dangers of chemical submission rather than dismissing victims' accounts. Without collective action, countless cases will continue to slip through the cracks. - Watch the full video from DW Documentary below.

- Exam season in full flow 🧠📚 — Friday 15 May 2026
- The BBC has unveiled a fresh comedy series starring Hugh Bonneville as Ian Fletcher, the hapless bureaucrat audiences first met during the London 2012 Olympics coverage. In this new outing, Fletcher arrives in Miami to serve as Director of Integrity for the Oversight team tasked with organising the planet’s largest football tournament. The stakes could not be higher, as the production skewers the intricate web of international federations, corporate sponsors and local politics that shape modern mega-events.
Set against the sun-drenched backdrop of South Florida, the series follows Fletcher’s attempts to uphold ethical standards while navigating competing demands from global stakeholders. Writers draw on real-world controversies surrounding bidding processes and governance to deliver sharp satire that resonates far beyond Britain. International viewers, particularly those in emerging football markets across Asia, Africa and Latin America, will recognise the familiar tensions between sporting ideals and commercial pressures.
Early clips suggest the show maintains the gentle observational humour of its predecessors while updating the target for a new era of global sports administration. With Miami serving as both glamorous setting and symbolic crossroads of North and South American interests, the comedy arrives at a moment when many nations are reassessing how they host and regulate major tournaments. Audiences can expect the same affectionate mockery of institutional language and committee culture that made earlier seasons appointment viewing. - Watch the full video from BBC News below.

- 'Keir Starmer would really add to his own reputation if he resigns', says former US adviser — Friday 15 May 2026
- Former US national security adviser John Bolton has suggested that Keir Starmer should consider stepping down to salvage his standing in British politics. Speaking on Sky's Mornings programme, Bolton argued that resignation would enhance the Labour leadership contender's reputation, given his slim chances of prevailing in the ongoing contest. The remarks come amid intense scrutiny of the party's direction following its recent electoral setbacks.
Bolton's intervention highlights the international attention on Labour's internal struggles, with the former Trump official drawing parallels to American political dynamics. For UK audiences, the comments underscore the challenges facing Starmer as he seeks to unify a divided party and present a credible alternative to Boris Johnson's government. Observers note that such external critiques could influence voter perceptions, particularly among those wary of prolonged leadership uncertainty.
The discussion also touched on Donald Trump's forthcoming state visit to China, with Bolton offering insights into its potential ramifications for transatlantic relations. As Britain navigates post-Brexit diplomacy, these observations serve as a reminder of the delicate balance London must strike between Washington and Beijing. - Watch the full video from Sky News below.

- The finale of Race Across The World 2026 is here — Friday 15 May 2026
- As the final checkpoints vanish in the dust of the Mongolian steppe, BBC viewers are treated to the nail-biting conclusion of Race Across the World. Five British pairs have navigated a punishing west-to-east route from familiar European motorways to the remote fringes of Asia, armed with little more than paper maps and dwindling cash. The absence of phones has forced genuine resourcefulness, a reminder of how dependent we have become on instant digital fixes when plans go awry.
For UK audiences the spectacle carries extra resonance. Many will recognise the quiet determination on display as quintessentially British, echoing the spirit of intrepid travellers from Freya Stark to Michael Palin. Yet the series also lays bare the practical headaches of post-Brexit border crossings and currency fluctuations that ordinary holidaymakers now face. Watching contestants barter for lifts and beds on shoestring budgets offers both escapism and a sobering lesson in adaptability.
With the finish line in sight, one pair is poised to claim victory. Whether it is the couple who mastered every hitchhike or the friends who gambled on an unexpected route, their triumph will be celebrated in living rooms from London to Loch Lomond. The journey may end on screen, but the conversations it sparks about resilience and discovery are likely to linger long after the credits roll. - Watch the full video from BBC News below.

- 'Bombshell' leaked US intelligence says 'China outmanoeuvring America' — Thursday 14 May 2026
- A leaked US intelligence assessment has delivered a stark warning that China is outmanoeuvring America at a critical moment, capitalising on President Trump's deepening entanglement in the Iran conflict. The documents, shared with American media, suggest Beijing is quietly consolidating influence across key regions while Washington remains distracted by missile strikes and regional fallout. This comes just weeks before the much-anticipated US-China summit, raising questions about whether the American negotiating position has already been weakened.
BBC diplomatic editor Mark Urban examines these developments in the latest edition of The Fourcast Indicators, highlighting how the leaks point to a strategic recalibration in Asia that could leave US allies exposed. With Trump facing domestic pressure over the costs of the Iran campaign, the assessment argues that China is accelerating its economic and military outreach without direct confrontation. The timing could hardly be more awkward for an administration that has long touted its tough stance on Beijing.
For Britain, the implications are immediate. Any perceived erosion of American leverage in the Pacific directly affects our own efforts to secure post-Brexit trade agreements while maintaining intelligence cooperation through the Five Eyes alliance. Ministers in London will be watching the summit closely, aware that a distracted Washington might push for quicker concessions on technology and security that could clash with UK interests. As ever, the special relationship offers reassurance, yet the leaks serve as a reminder that global power shifts rarely wait for any single leader to catch up. - Watch the full video from Channel 4 News below.
