Drawing a Line in the Sand: Rural NC Battles PFAS Pollution

Downstream from industrial sprawl, rural communities in North Carolina are waging an escalating war against “forever chemicals” that have poisoned their water and soil. For decades, PFAS compounds—linked to cancer, immune disorders, and developmental delays—flowed quietly from manufacturing sites like the Chemours plant into the Cape Fear River, turning wells and farmland across Bladen, Cumberland, and Robeson counties into toxic hotspots. Now, residents are fighting back with a blend of grassroots grit and legal firepower.

“We were drinking poison and nobody warned us,” says Mary Locklear, a fourth-generation farmer in St. Pauls, as she points to the reverse-osmosis system now tethered to her kitchen sink—a lifeline she paid for out of pocket. Locklear is among hundreds who have joined class-action lawsuits, squeezing settlements that fund private filtration and independent health studies. Yet the battle doesn’t end at the tap. Community coalitions, armed with sampling kits and data, are pressuring state regulators to mandate comprehensive testing in private wells—often excluded from official monitoring. They are also pushing for binding cleanup standards, not just advisory levels.

This isn’t a story of waiting for rescue. Rural churches host PFAS education nights; local labs train volunteers to collect samples. A growing cooperative is piping filtered water to families who can’t afford treatment systems. Their message is stark: rural lives are not expendable, and environmental justice demands accountability from polluters whose reach extends far beyond city limits.
