More Weapons Do not Mean More Peace, UN Expert Says

UN Expert Warns: More Weapons Will Never Deliver Peace

By Fatima Al-Rashid, Global1.news Ramallah – 19 May 2026

In a sobering address released just hours ago by the United Nations Human Rights Office, a leading UN expert declared what countless communities living under bombardment have long understood: flooding conflict zones with more weapons does not bring peace—it deepens the cycle of death, displacement, and despair. The May 19 video statement, titled "More Weapons Do Not Mean More Peace," arrives at a moment when global military spending has surged past $2.4 trillion and civilian casualties in Gaza, the West Bank, Sudan, and Ukraine continue to climb.

A Clear Message from Geneva

The expert, whose mandate covers the human rights implications of arms transfers, minced no words. "Every rifle, every missile, every drone supplied to parties in conflict prolongs suffering and violates the fundamental right to life," the statement reads. The video, available on the UN Human Rights YouTube channel, underscores how the legal and moral obligations of states under international humanitarian law are routinely ignored in the rush to arm allies.

This is not abstract theory. In Ramallah, where I write these words, the sound of distant explosions still echoes from the latest escalation in Gaza. Families displaced multiple times since October 2023 now face yet another wave of forced movement as new armaments reach both sides. The expert's warning could not be timelier.

The Human Cost of the Arms Trade

Behind the statistics lies lived reality. According to UN data cited in the video, more than 100,000 civilians have been killed or injured in Gaza since late 2023, with the overwhelming majority of fatalities attributed to explosive weapons in populated areas. Each new shipment of precision-guided munitions or heavy artillery simply raises the body count while pushing hundreds of thousands more people from their homes.

The same pattern repeats elsewhere. In Sudan, foreign-supplied weapons have fueled militia clashes that have displaced over 10 million people. In Ukraine, both Russian and Western arms flows have turned cities into rubble. The UN expert correctly notes that these transfers rarely shorten wars; they monetize them.

What makes the statement particularly powerful is its emphasis on accountability. States that authorize exports while knowing the weapons will be used against civilians are complicit in potential war crimes. The expert calls for immediate suspension of all transfers to parties credibly accused of grave violations—an appeal that directly challenges the policies of several major powers.

Why Militarization Fails the Test of Dignity

From my vantage point in the occupied West Bank, the futility of the "more weapons, more security" doctrine is visible every day. Checkpoints multiply, settlements expand, and young people grow up knowing only checkpoints and curfews. Adding heavier weaponry to this equation does not restore dignity; it strips it away.

The UN expert's intervention also highlights the gendered impact of arms proliferation. Women and girls bear the brunt of displacement, sexual violence in camps, and the loss of male breadwinners. Children, meanwhile, are robbed of education and subjected to trauma that will shape generations.

Pathways Toward Genuine Peace

Rather than more guns, the expert advocates renewed investment in diplomacy, inclusive dialogue, and accountability mechanisms. This includes strengthening the Arms Trade Treaty, enforcing existing embargoes, and supporting civil-society monitoring of illicit flows. These are not idealistic wishes, they are practical steps that have demonstrably reduced violence in past conflicts when given political backing.

Local voices in Palestine and across the Global South have long argued the same. Grassroots movements for disarmament and nonviolent resistance continue despite repression. Amplifying these voices, rather than arming governments, offers the only sustainable route to dignity and security.

A Call to the International Community

The timing of the UN statement, mere hours old, should force a reckoning. Governments that claim to champion human rights cannot simultaneously flood battlefields with weapons and then express shock at the resulting humanitarian catastrophe. Citizens worldwide must demand transparency in arms licensing and hold elected officials accountable.

As the expert concluded, "Peace is not manufactured in weapons factories. It is built through justice, equality, and respect for every human life."

In Ramallah tonight, as families gather under the same sky that has witnessed too many broken ceasefires, that message resonates with painful clarity. More weapons have never meant more peace. It is time the world acted as though it believes that simple truth.
