T&T Midday News Roundup: Fresh Developments Unfold Across the Nation

By Sharon Sahatoo | 18th May, 2026

Good afternoon from Couva. Just hours ago, CNC3 Television aired its Midday News bulletin, bringing viewers up to speed on the latest happenings from Port of Spain to Scarborough. The broadcast painted a picture of a busy island dealing with everything from crime to community upliftment, all under the watchful gaze of this afternoon's blazing sun.

Shooting Rocks San Fernando Last Night

Residents in San Fernando are still reeling after a brazen shooting erupted on Coffee Street late last night. Police say two men were injured when gunmen opened fire near a popular liming spot. One victim remains in critical condition at the San Fernando General Hospital whilst the other is listed as stable.

Officers from the Southern Division have launched a manhunt, and roadblocks were set up along the Cipero Road earlier this morning. No arrests have been made so far, but sources close to the investigation tell me they are following several leads. This latest incident adds to the growing concern over gun violence in the south.

Government Unveils New Youth Employment Programme

In positive news, the Ministry of Youth Development announced a fresh initiative aimed at tackling unemployment among young people. The programme, which will roll out next month, promises to place 5,000 youths in jobs across various sectors including agriculture, tourism and digital services.

Minister of Labour and Small Enterprise Development, speaking at a press conference this morning, emphasised that the focus would be on sustainable work rather than temporary gigs. "We are jobs; we are building futures," he said. Several organisations have already signed on to participate.

Heavy Rains Cause Minor Flooding in Central Areas

Meanwhile, heavy showers that began falling across central Trinidad earlier today have led to some flooding in low-lying areas of Couva and Chaguanas. The Ministry of Works and Transport deployed teams to clear blocked drains, and motorists are being urged to drive with caution.

No major damage has been reported, but several schools in the area dismissed students early as a precaution. The Meteorological Service says more showers are possible throughout the afternoon.

Community Spirit Shines at Local Health Fair

Over in Couva, a community health fair organised by the Couva District Health Facility drew hundreds of residents this morning. Free screenings for diabetes and hypertension were on offer, alongside talks on healthy eating and mental wellness.

One elderly resident told me she was grateful for the initiative, noting that such events help bridge the gap for those who cannot easily access private care. The fair continues until 4:00 p.m. today.

These stories and more dominated the midday airwaves, reminding us that life in T&T moves at its own pace — full of challenges, but also moments of hope and togetherness.
