Hours after three US Navy destroyers came under coordinated Iranian attack in the Strait of Hormuz — missiles, drones, swarming boats — and after CENTCOM launched self-defense strikes on Iranian military targets, the President of the United States had something to say.

He called it a "love tap."

Yes. You read that correctly.

According to US media reports, President Donald Trump described the strikes against Iranian targets as just a "love tap" and added that "the ceasefire is going. It's in effect."

Let me be absolutely clear about what happened here. Iranian forces fired missiles at American warships in international waters. USS Truxtun. USS Rafael Peralta. USS Mason. Sailors on those ships had to engage defensive systems to protect their lives. And CENTCOM — thankfully, competently — struck back, hitting launch sites, command centers, and intelligence nodes.

That's not a "love tap." That's a military response to an act of aggression.

I don't care what your politics are. I don't care if you voted for Trump twice or despise him. When you're the Commander-in-Chief and your sailors just dodged Iranian missiles, maybe — just maybe — you don't reduce it to a punchline at what appears to be a press gaggle or media availability.

The disconnect here is staggering. On one side, you have career military officers at CENTCOM issuing measured, professional statements about self-defense and readiness. On the other, you have the President treating it like a negotiation anecdote from The Art of the Deal.

"The ceasefire is going. It's in effect."

Which ceasefire? With whom? Iran just fired on American warships 24 hours ago. What exactly is "in effect"? Because from where I'm sitting, what's in effect is confusion — and confusion in the Middle East gets people killed.

Here's what I want to know: Did the Pentagon know this characterization was coming? Did anyone in the Situation Room advise against calling military strikes a "love tap" while the ink is still wet on the after-action reports?

Words matter. Especially from the Oval Office. Especially when armed forces are in the field. Dismissing an Iranian attack as something cute and harmless doesn't project strength — it projects carelessness. And Tehran is absolutely listening.

The sailors on those destroyers did their jobs. They defended their ships, their crewmates, and American interests. They deserve leadership that takes that seriously — publicly and privately.

"Love tap" is what you call a fender bender in a parking lot. Not a missile barrage in the most volatile waterway on Earth.
